A new rumble or rattle can make every drive sound different. It can also be a sign that part of your exhaust system needs attention.
What does the exhaust system do?
Exhaust pipes carry gases away from the engine and vehicle. The muffler helps control noise, while the catalytic converter helps reduce certain emissions. Pipes, connections, hangers and heat shields also need to remain secure and in good condition.
Signs to have checked
- Your vehicle sounds louder than usual
- You hear a rumble, rattle or clunk beneath the vehicle
- You notice an exhaust smell in or around the vehicle
- A component appears loose or hangs lower than it should
- A warning light appears along with a change in how the vehicle runs
These signs do not point to one specific part. An inspection helps locate the problem before a repair is recommended.

Take it seriously. Stop driving when safe and arrange to have the vehicle checked. An exhaust leak can allow carbon monoxide into the cabin, and carbon monoxide itself has no smell.
