Give Your Car the Care It Deserves with a Professional Tune-Up
What does a tune-up actually involve—and how do you know when your vehicle needs one?
A little attention goes a long way
Your car handles the school run, the commute and the weekend trips. Keeping up with its maintenance helps you look after the vehicle you rely on.
But “tune-up” can mean different things for different vehicles. There isn’t one package or service interval that suits every engine. The right work depends on your vehicle’s design, service history, mileage and condition.
If your car has started running differently, the first step is to understand why. Routine maintenance may be due, but a particular fault may need diagnostic testing.
What might a professional tune-up include?
Depending on your vehicle and the maintenance it needs, recommended work may include:
- Spark plugs: Inspection or replacement when due on applicable engines.
- Engine air filter: Checking its condition and replacing it when needed.
- Ignition components: Assessing relevant components if there are starting, misfire or engine-running concerns.
- Other scheduled maintenance: Reviewing the manufacturer’s recommendations and your vehicle’s service history.
Fuel system cleaning, filter replacement and other work should be recommended for a reason. They are not automatically needed at every tune-up.
How often does your car need a tune-up?
Start with your owner’s manual. Different maintenance items have different schedules, so a single mileage figure for “a tune-up” can be misleading.
Your vehicle’s age, mileage, driving conditions and previous maintenance help determine what is due.
If you’re unsure, bring your service records or tell us what you know about the vehicle. We can help you work out the next step.
What if your engine is running differently?
Mention changes such as:
- Rough idling or difficult starting
- Hesitation or reduced performance
- A noticeable change in fuel consumption
- A check engine light
These symptoms can have several causes. Replacing service items without investigating the problem may not resolve it.

Make maintenance a plan, rather than a guess
Keeping a record of your servicing makes it easier to see what has been done and what is coming up. It also gives your mechanic useful background when a new concern appears.
Ask what is recommended, why it is needed and what it will cost. Understanding the work helps you make an informed decision about your vehicle.
